Gary W. Hern Sr.

Gary W. Hern Sr., 84, of Carbondale, IL, died February 28, 2025, in Waterloo, IL. He was born May 7, 1940, in St. Louis, MO.

He is survived by his wife Mary Frances Hern (nee Melliere); son Gary (Dana) Hern Jr.; 3 granddaughters Rebecca Hern, Mehgan Little, and Nicole Hern; step-daughters Sabrina (John) Deterding, Kim Hattendorf, and Renee (Mark) Bollinger; many great grandchildren; siblings Gloria Goldschmidt, Larry (Donna) Hern, Sharon (Larry) Caswell, and Shawn Christmann; nieces; nephews; and cousins.

He is preceded in death by his son Mark Hern; parents Roy and Norma (nee Gibbs) Hern; brothers Royce Hern and Roger Hern; and sister Glenda (Brock) Hern.

Gary was a United States Marine Veteran and was a member of the American Coon Hunters Association (ACHA) where he was a hall of fame member. A notable achievement of Gary's, is that he was a 4 time World Champion PKC/AKC/UKC. Gary enjoyed many nights of hunting his Red Eagle Walkers, peaceful days fishing, and camping.
